I Dream I’m Left Behind is an album about the gray areas between extremes: between medicine and poison; between joy and sadness; between human connection and the desire to be alone. It’s an album that explores the delirious joys and complex challenges of domestic life, and all the ways that human beings cope with the difficulties of being alive.
Sonically, I Dream I’m Left Behind occupies a similar gray space between genres, blending elements of shoegaze, indie rock, post-rock, midwest emo, and ambient music. Songs move from the blown-out fuzz and soaring leads of bands like Infinity Girl and Slowdive, to the twinkling arpeggios and plaintive vocals of American Football and Sunny Day Real Estate, to the experimental sonic exploration of The Appleseed Cast and Mogwai. After years of being told that the songs I wrote didn’t belong together on an album, I wanted to find a way to bridge all the diverse genres that have influenced me over the years.
This album is a tour of ‘90s and ‘00s teenage nostalgia. It’s a clove cigarette smoked alone on the roof. It’s writing a letter to your unrequited crush that you hope you’ll be brave enough to send. It’s driving to your school at night just to see what it’s like when everyone is gone. It’s a dream of being left behind.
